Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
