The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Between Rock Generations

It has been two decades after the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the means to feel like rock legends. Not in reality, but try telling that anyone who has mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the display synchronized to the music. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, creating the sensation of a genuine live show.

The studio had already tried its hand with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, later acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable franchise which made a remarkable influence for many musicians included, introducing decades-old bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, remembers the early financial challenges in securing the recordings – even though initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the publishing rights by themselves, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. But once the game became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was how many parents got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the songs they loved. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band the Answer included their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Lead musician the artist recalls how the series brought older hits back into vogue: “The game provided a larger, younger audience. Generally this had been seen as music that was past it, however when it was featured on the title young people were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised it, eliminating the outdated label. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record remained unreleased in the US, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the group as they went on US tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew had on the song during travel, and several recognized us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts soon took advantage of the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around their music collections and related stories, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly to have made the band more money compared to their records. It sold well over 500,000 copies upon release, while sales of their songs saw an increase of up to 40% during an era as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication among its fans. Earlier this year, an online personality completed an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics but an array of personalization features. The song is difficult even in the hardest setting, let alone performed at double speed and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer claimed requiring nine months of practice.

“Guitar Hero offers a, fantasy thing. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up a real gun and go to war,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band had already wrapped up a profitable run before their hit was featured in the third game, yet he explains it made them a household name. “I recall the record label informing us that we were records were moving like crazy,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it risked eclipsing everything else the band has done. Recently, the song was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “If you only hear a single track, that's fine – each person has a unique path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Legacy from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of being a music icon on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive urge to make music, and they wanted to use technology to allow people to do it”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out over a mere half-decade between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, aside from a brief comeback in 2015.

Games like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene active, and there’s set to be a new product from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has entered work on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game following Guitar Hero?

“We thought such titles could be similar to sports games allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to continue for future fans.”
